The Budget Adjustment Advisory Committee, which is made up of staff and community members, has worked closely with district administrators to put the finishing touches on a recommendation for the school board to consider as it looks to fill an estimated $10 million funding gap for the 2012-2013 school year.
Please view the recommendation at http://stillwater.k12.mn.us/Budget_Adjustments2.html and share your thoughts about the proposed recommendation. All feedback gathered on this site will be shared with school board members as they consider a final list of cuts for approval on March 8, 2012.

Don't remove the principal from Afton-Lakeland
With 500 students, the principal is needed in the school every day. Only Lily Lake, Lake Elmo and Rutherford have more students than Afton-Lakeland.

Do not eliminate 5th & 6th band and orchestra
Eliminating these would do our students a great injustice; music programs are a vital part of education. Not introducing band and orchestra in elementary would greatly undermine these programs in junior and senior high. Consider charging fees for lessons instead.

Maintain paraprofessional model at Stonebridge.
There are other ways to cut costs within the model rather than change a model that has worked great for Stonebridge.

Do not reduce teachers at Marine and Withrow. Both of these schools are rated in the top 10
Both of these schools are rated in the top 10 elementary schools in MN. Let's not chip away from these schools that are doing so well. They also provide a traditional academic atmosphere. For those of us in the Stonebridge area, the open structure is not a fit for all kids. Marine and Withrow offer an option for a traditional school. In order to get more kids there, have a bus stop in Stillwater (North hill and South hill). This will keep more kids in the Stillwater public schools instead of those families looking for a traditonal setting at St.… more

Do not eliminate all day Kindergarten
How about NOT eliminating all day kindergarten? To make this cut is to start our students at a disadvantage. Research supports full day kindergarten as a contributing factor of greater academic achievement. Full day kindergarten students performed statistically significantly higher than half day students on nationally standardized tests measuring skills in reading, spelling, and handwriting, as well as on tests measuring individual skills. They show statistically significant mean gains on the English, mathematics, and handwriting subtests of these standardized achievement tests. Similar results have been found in studies on other achievement outcomes, including prerequisite reading skills and oral language assessments.… more

Do Not eliminate the Autism Specialists for the District
This proposal has been hidden under a generic special education reduction and has no input from parents of children on the spectrum. Reduced support for ASD kids in the classroom will impact typical kids and the lack of specialized support will impact all special ed kids as remaining staff do their best to manage. This is a short-sighted reduction at best.

Pay for all day Kindergarten
I don't agree with the proposed idea of having Kindergarteners go to school all day, every other day. I think that would be confusing to them and doesn't help them get used to the school schedule. A better solution might be to offer half day Kindergarten every day, and allow parents the option to opt-in and pay for all-day Kindergarten if they choose. I know I'd prefer to pay extra for all day Kindergarten as opposed to paying for daycare on days when the Kindergartners otherwise wouldn't have school. Other schools in the area (like South Washington County) charge for… more

Autism specialists are a VITAL part of the school systems, and the number of autistic children is rising.
As a mom of 2 children on the Autism spectrum, I know the value and the need for the specialists in the system. They are not a luxury item that is not very needed, and can just be eliminated - such as reducing the hours in the school day or increasing sport costs. The number of children on the spectrum is on the rise, and the need for specialists will only increase-not decrease. I know firsthand that while regular school teachers are great, they simply do not have the time to deal with the behavioral issues that come up in… more

Reform the pension and healthcare benefits for future retirees
Teachers and administrators that are currently retired deserve the benefits they were promised. However, it is unsustainable to pay future retirees these types of benefits that far exceed what anyone in the public sector is provided. 50% of the money in education goes to paying retired teacher and administrator pension and healthcare benefits. This is by far the best place to make cuts, but is not currently even an option due to the power of the teacher's union.

Four-day school week
Lengthen the school day Mondays through Thursdays, and save a full day of expenses. Other districts in Minnesota have done it and the majority of responses from parents have been positive.

Snow Day Expense
What if the district didn't pay teachers for not reporting on a snow day? I heard that the cost savings would be approximately $300,000.00.

Make changes to the Gifted and Talented Program
Why is the Gifted and Talented program, at the elementary level, not subject to any cuts yet the ALC and special education programs are specifically called out for cuts. The GT services are currently being duplicated by offering GATE and clustering within the school. The District should support clustering within the schools and eliminate the GATE program. All students would then be provided with an inclusive education. Cost saving would be seen by reducing staff and programing for the GATE program and the existing resources would then better support the clustering that is in place in our schools.

Reduce non-mandated testing
Why is this so far down the list? This seems so obvious. There is way too much testing and obsessing over math and reading scores-- even in Kindergarten it seemed like half of the teachers' time in the first month was spent doing assessment after assessment. Now the assessments are starting up again after a 1-2 month break. The class even had substitutes on some days so the teacher could do assessments. Spend less time and money on assessments and more time teaching.

Adjust small class sizes at Marine / Withrow to match levels at other elementary schools.
Equity between school buildings is important -- especially in fiscally lean times. With students across the district facing increasingly larger classes we can no longer afford to preserve the small class sizes in these two schools. We need to be fair; it's time for an adjustment.

Do not eliminate the autism specialists. This will further put these students behind.
Eliminating autism specialists may force parents to remove their children from ISD 834 into other school districts with more competitive special education programs. Right now 834 has a clear advantage with having autism specialists who can meet the needs of our children.
