Vision 2014
We have good schools, but we know they can be better. Our strategic planning process, called Vision 2014, is all about changing the way we do things in order to provide the very best learning opportunities for our students.
Vision 2014 calls for our schools to change, but how they will change is up to all of us to decide. Please join the conversation and suggest ways we can improve.

Join the rest of the world and move to year-round schooling.
Our long summer break is an anachronism, and it’s hurting our children relative to their peers in other parts of the world. The benefits of year-round schooling to students are obvious and proven. We experienced this while living overseas, and it is a much better way to keep kids engaged in learning. Teachers may initially resist this, but properly engaged they will help implement this so all stakeholders emerge as winners. The vacation lobby will complain, but districts can stagger schedules as is done with Spring Breaks. Let’s design a year-round option for teachers and parents for 2014 as a… more

School Calendar
The school calendar run too long into the summer. By the 1st week of June, the kids are tuned out and ready for vacation. It would save the district money if they ended by Memorial day.

Decrease class size
We need to be realistic about how many students are in each class - over 40 in a junior high science class is not safe, over 40 in an English class means that the teacher cannot give detailed feedback on essays to improve students' writing skills.

Expand world languages and academic rigor
Our district is one of the few in MN to offer just two world languages consistently. Our students will be competing in the global marketplace, and the new superintendent must ensure that the academic programming will prepare them to be successful. This doesn't require the cost of a building expansion or remodeling to a four-year high school to happen, but a more purposeful focus on academic rigor and what students need to be college ready and on par with their peers around the world. Put the money into teachers and programming, not buildings.

Do not move the 6th graders from Rutherford and Lake Elmo to the junior highs next year
In his Nov. 24th Talk of the District, Superintendent Tom Nelson lays out his arguments for the middle school model; in doing so, he also demonstrates why sixth graders should not be placed in a junior high with ninth graders, and why the proposal to move the sixth graders from Rutherford and Lake Elmo to the junior highs next year should NOT be considered. In his words, "ninth graders are high school students...earning (high school) credits...participating in high school activities and athletics." He also states that "most ninth graders are physically mature and emotionally ready to attend...high school." Based on… more

Separate the Jr. High & Sr. High bussing
Two problems with having the Jr and Sr high kids on the same busses. First, the bus ride starts too early and last too long to accomidate both schools. Second, it is not appropriate to have 12 year olds riding the bus with juniors or seniors in high school.
